1. Appointment of supervisor(s). Submission of an application for the appointment of a supervisor(s) within a month from the date of commencement of education at the Doctoral School (the application must specify the proposed topic and concept for the dissertation, indicating the field of science and discipline; the application must specify the candidate(s) to act as supervisor(s); in the case of an application for the appointment of supervisors, justification must be given in the application). The application is accompanied by a consent to act as supervisor, a schedule for the preparation of the dissertation, a list of achievements to date, and information on the procedure if the person has previously applied for a degree in the same field or discipline). If a doctoral student does not apply for the appointment of a supervisor(s) in due time, the Discipline Council appoints the doctoral student a supervisor(s) on its own.

2. Adoption of a resolution on the appointment of a supervisor(s)   Adoption of a resolution taking into account that the Supervisor may be a person with at least a post-doctoral degree. The supervisor may be a person who does not meet the above-mentioned conditions and who is an employee of a foreign university or academic institution if the Discipline Council considers that this person has significant achievements in the academic disciplines to which the dissertation relates. A person may not become a supervisor if, within the last 5 years: 1) was the supervisor of 4 doctoral students who were removed from the doctoral list due to a negative mid-term assessment, or 2) supervised the preparation of a dissertation by at least 2 doctoral applicants who did not receive positive reviews. When adopting the resolution, consideration should be given to the candidate's academic activity, including the convergence of the research topic with the dissertation topic, the current number of doctoral students under the candidate's supervision and the candidate's lack of disciplinary record.  
3. Appointment of an assistant supervisor Submission of an application for the appointment of an assistant supervisor. The application shall be accompanied by the supervisor's opinion in support of the candidate for assistant supervisor, justification of the necessity to appoint an assistant supervisor, the opinion of the Director of the Doctoral School, the opinion of the Dean, the academic resume of the candidate for assistant supervisor, information on the candidate's involvement in other research projects including supervision of other doctoral students, the candidate's teaching load and consent to act as assistant supervisor).   Request for the appointment of an assistant advisor
4. Adoption of a resolution on the appointment of an assistant supervisor   Adoption of the resolution, taking into account that the assistant supervisor may be a person holding at least a doctoral degree   
5. Initiation of procedure for the award of a doctoral degree Submission of an application for initiation of the procedure indicating the field of science and discipline in which the degree is sought. The application is accompanied by:
- the dissertation (3 hard-bound copies for reviewers, 1 free-bound copy for the archives and an electronic version), an integral part of which is an abstract in English and, in the case of a dissertation prepared in a foreign language, also an abstract in Polish. (The dissertation may be a written work, including a scientific monograph, a collection of published and thematically related articles; a hybrid form of work consisting partly of published manuscripts is also acceptable);
- the dissertation is accompanied by an abstract in English and Polish in pdf form;
- the application must be accompanied by a positive opinion of the supervisor or supervisors if more than one supervisor has been appointed;
- a document confirming the possession of the professional title of Master, Master of Engineering or equivalent or possession of a diploma giving the right to apply for a doctoral degree in Poland;
- a certificate or diploma certifying knowledge of a modern foreign language at the level of at least B2 (fulfilment of the requirement is demonstrated by persons who have a diploma in modern foreign language philology, applied linguistics or university degree in a foreign language; in addition, persons who have a language certificate issued by the Centre for Foreign Languages UG or a certificate issued by another university and verified by the CJO on the basis of the verification procedure (See Proof of foreign language proficiency), in the case of an applicant for a doctoral degree who does not have the relevant certificate or diploma, the doctoral subject may conduct an examination confirming proficiency in a modern foreign language at the B2 level;
- at least 1 scientific article or 1 scientific monograph, together with a declaration specifying the individual contribution to the publication; - if the thesis is a collection of publications, the declarations of all co-authors (or at least the applicant and four co-authors if the collective work has more than five co-authors) shall also be attached to the application;
- the dissertation is also accompanied by the candidate's written consent attested by their signature to make the doctoral dissertation available in the reading room of the University of Gdańsk (1 copy of the dissertation with the consent attached shall be made available for inspection in the reading room of the UG Library);
- a statement that the dissertation is compatible with the paper version.

6. Notification to the Director of the Doctoral School of a degree applicant's application to initiate the procedure.   Notification to the Director of the Doctoral School of a degree applicant's application to initiate the procedure.  
7. Checking the dissertation in the Uniform Anti-plagiarism System (JSA)   The staff member operating the Discipline Council places the dissertation in the JSA system. The supervisor checks the dissertation using the JSA and approves the generated report (with a handwritten signature or qualified electronic signature). The promoter submits the report to the Disciplinary Office.  
8. Opinion on the application   The Chairman of the Council appoints a team of three persons with a professorial or post-doctoral degree for whom UG is the primary place of work and who have made statements in the discipline of at least 0.5. The team verifies that the requirements are met.  
9. Verification of learning outcomes for qualifications at PRK level 8   The above-appointed team carries out the verification of the educational outcomes according to the rules specified in the Appendix to the 'Procedure for the award of the doctoral degree at UG'. Verification of PRK8 is based on the completion of the educational programme in the Doctoral School.  
10. Informing the Council of the team's opinion.   The team draws up and signs the verification report. The report is drawn up to indicate in particular who, when, where and what verification activities have been carried out and whether 
the applicant for the award of a doctoral degree in the extramural mode has achieved the educational outcomes indicated in the table set out in § 1 of the Appendix to the Procedure for the Award of a Doctoral Degree at UG. 
 
11. Resolution on the initiation of the procedure for the award of a doctoral degree   The Council adopts a resolution to initiate the procedure for the award of the doctoral degree, or the Council adopts a resolution to refuse to initiate the procedure with justification if the said resolution is not adopted.  
12. Appointment of reviewers   The Discipline Council appoints three reviewers from among persons who are not employees of UG and the university or other unit whose employee is the applicant for the doctoral degree, with the proviso that the reviewer may be a person holding at least a post-doctoral degree or a person who does not meet this requirement, who is an employee of a foreign university or scientific institution if the Council considers that the person has significant achievements in the academic disciplines to which the dissertation relates. The review process takes two months. The review may contain proposals for supplementing or improving the dissertation, which are communicated to the candidate and the supervisor by the discipline council of the doctoral programme. The candidate submits the completed or revised dissertation to the discipline council conducting the doctoral dissertation, which refers it to the same reviewers for reassessment. Reviewers submit a review of the completed or revised dissertation to the discipline council conducting the doctoral dissertation within one month of receiving the request for the review. The review contains an unambiguous, either positive or negative, assessment conclusion; where the dissertation is part of a collective work, the review contains an assessment of the individual contribution of the applicant for the degree to that work. 13. Doctoral examination An applicant for a doctoral degree takes an examination in an academic discipline before an examination board. The Discipline Council appoints an examination board before which the applicant for the award of the doctoral degree takes a doctoral examination in the academic discipline. The board consists of at least three members of the Discipline Council. At the request of the applicant for the award of the doctoral degree that has failed the examination, the Discipline Council may allow the applicant to retake the examination, but not earlier than after three months and not more than once. 14. Appointment of the doctoral committee   The Council appoints a committee of at least seven members of UG academic staff with a title of professor or a postdoctoral degree, for whom UG is the primary place of work and who have made a declaration that they represent at least 0.5 academic disciplines; three dissertation reviewers, a supervisor or supervisors. The doctoral committee consists of members of the examination board.  
15. Admission to the dissertation defence   After obtaining positive reviews from at least 2 reviewers and passing the examination in the discipline, the Discipline Council passes a resolution on acceptance and admission to the public defence. The resolution sets the day and place of the defence. Otherwise, the Council adopts a resolution on the refusal of admission to the defence with justification.  
16. Making information available in BIP and POL-on   The dissertation, including its abstract and reviews, is made available in the BIP and the POL-on system. Information on the date, place and manner of the defence is made available in the BIP. The dissertation, including the abstract, is also submitted to the UG repository. Not later than 30 days before the date set for the defence of the doctoral dissertation, the doctoral institution makes the dissertation, including the abstract and the reviews, available on the subject's website in the BIP. The documents, once made available, are posted in the POL-on system and the BIP. Information on the date and place of the defence is forwarded to other units no later than 7 days before the defence.   
17. Dissertation defence   The dissertation defence is attended by no less than half of the members of the doctoral committee, including the supervisor and at least one reviewer. The meeting of the doctoral committee may also be attended by an assistant supervisor without voting rights.  
18. Resolution on the acceptance of defence   The doctoral committee, in a closed session after the defence, adopts a resolution on the acceptance of the defence of the dissertation and prepares a draft resolution on the award of the doctoral degree.  
19. Awarding of the degree   The Discipline Council, in the presence of at least half of the members entitled to vote and within 60 days of the date of the defence, adopts a resolution on the award of the doctoral degree.  
20. Notification of the Director of the Doctoral School   The Chairman of the Discipline Council notifies the Director of the Doctoral School of the award of the degree.
