Final of the Biotechnology Knowledge Competition 'Proteins and their Role in Human Metabolism and Diseases'.
The final of another edition of the Biotechnology Knowledge Competition for secondary school students was held on 20.03.2023 at our Faculty. This time, students faced the topic 'Proteins and their Role in Human Metabolism and Diseases'. The competition was intended for students from the Pomeranian Voivodeship. Forty-one students from 15 schools qualified for the finals. The final competition questions were challenging, covering many university-level biochemistry topics. The students were well prepared and coped with the most difficult tasks.
Three winners were selected in the competition:
1st place - Zuzanna Żyra from Gdańsk Autonomous Secondary School
2nd place - Karol Kołodko from the X Gdynia Secondary School
3rd place - Paulina Gruszczyńska from the St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School in Gdynia
In the team competition, the X Secondary School in Gdynia won, securing its school a place at the biotechnology workshop 'Biotech Week', which will take place in September 2023.
IFB's Vice-Dean for Student Affairs and Education, dr hab Mariusz Grinholc, prof. UG, presented the prizes to the winners. Additional attractions awaited the competition's finalists and their teachers through a tour of the IFB's nooks and crannies and a famous science lecture entitled. 'Once Upon a Time...Bacteria – secrets of the human microbiome' delivered by dr Magdalena Rajewska.
The event was organised by the competition committee consisting of dr Alicja Chmielewska, dr n. med. inż. Dorota Pomorska, dr hab. Szymon Ziętkiewicz and dr Agnieszka Kłosowska. Students from the Bio-Med Scientific Association helped to conduct the final stage.
